Since our last posting we have received the bees for the backyard, they ALL died over the winter. Beekeeping is hard, the bees are very sensitive and they just could not make it thru even this very mild winter, we left them plenty to eat over the winter, and now we have four boxes (which is a lot) of honey to start off the spring since they did not use it. This is a picture of them in our garage, we put them out yesterday, hope they survive – it is cold but they cannot live on our garage for long, so hoping for the best.

While David and our son, Garion have been off work, they built a dock to put in the river behind our house, we are the only people on the river who do not have a boat or a dock, so they built this floating dock and were putting in the water in this video. I was there to help if anything happened, and it did, the dock got stuck at the end, and David tried to lift it out of the water to move a piece of wood that was wedged underneath and he tore a ligament or tendon and has been out of commission of his right arm since Saturday. We spent 4 hours at the urgent care, it is not broken, and today a video conference with the orthopedic surgeon was good news of just move it as much as possible and take steroids. So good news there!
Putting in the dock on the river, but not smoothly.
I am working quite a bit from home and going into the hospitals to work whenever they need me, this is a picture of me and my friend Kathy today working hard and staying safe!

So this week, we have been eating together, like every week, but posting our dinners so far, we cook every night except Thursdays. Saturday – Salad nite. Easter – Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Cheese platter, corn, rolls, Salad, cupcakes with cherries and whipped frosting. Monday – Leftover Easter Dinner along with Brussel Sprouts. Tuesday- Fried rice with Pork and quinoa with frozen eggrolls (those were not good eggrolls, did not eat them). Wed – Chicken Tamales with Nacho Chips. Thursdays is our order out nite once a week. Friday will be Breakfast for dinner, probably pancakes with bacon and eggs.
bees! My husband is interested in bees – I would feel dreadful if they all died (we get very dry and droughty out here) Will keep researching. Great post, I enjoyed your update.

Thanks Kate, we have had bees for about 7 years now, and we have about a 50% overwinter rate, and you can catch bees with a swarm box, but this year we wanted to order some, but then the super cold. Keep researching, it is fun and helpful to the world to be a beekeeper!

Yeah, it’s still hard to do, they are very stingy and still very sensitive

So we are in rural Queensland Australia – it gets extremely hot (49 deg) and extremely cold (for us Aussies anyway -4) sometimes we get Rain and it’s beautiful and green and sometimes go ahead in between which is when I would be concerned for the bees – they may run out of food.

Thanks Kate, we feed them sugar in the winter, so they should be full, plus they can eat the honey, but it is cold. Australia sounds wonderful, we can’t wait to go for like a month

Best of luck Laura, great interesting post, hope you two are well as also your son.
And get a FDA approved mask 😉
Might as well make things lighter when talking about this tragedy, either you laugh at tragedy or you go down crying, might as well go down laughing. But I´m sure you as a family unit will be good, trust me on that one.

I feel we will be good as well Charley. Thank you. How are you holding up?

Doing good under the circumstances, seems I have always had a way to box things up, seal them and store it into some part of my brain. Then let them out when necessary, but mostly they are sealed. Again when necessary in extreme circumstances it seems I can react in a good manner, for me.

Well, that works. Boxing is like a file system of storage.

I recommend googling recovery-specific exercises. I did all the ones a current doc has recommended, back when I got the injury, but (about 4yrs later) I still can’t use my R shoulder very much.
Wishing a speedy repair… and for your bees to thrive!!

I’d love to keep bees but it’s not possible in an apartment though we did accidentally end up with a bee colony a few years back and a kindly bee keeper came and took them away.

Wow, in your apt. Yeah every once I awhile we get an exterminator asking for help. You could always ask a beekeeper could I help you, a summer 1/walk, this many jars as payment, lol

Poor David! Hope his arm feels back to normal asap! Is the injury to his shoulder, wrist or elbow?
The dock looks great btw! 👍
Good luck with the bees 🐝
I hope you will post more on the bees to keep us apprised of how they are doing!

Yes, he is feeling much better, but it is still sore the ortho surgeon gave him some steroids and told him to use it as much as possible, so that is a good sign. In fact he is feeling so much better he went outside today and dug a hole for a post and hit an electrical line (but did not get shocked) he did not call miss dig, so the energy company was upset. They said it was a 7000Volt line, super death line. I told him he is super lucky but crazy. Will update on the bees on the weekend.

Oh my goodness! Get that man back to his regular job on the double! (j/k)
I’m so glad that he’s okay! I wouldn’t have thought to call on something like that… for a post hole. Yikes. Now I know, so thanks for the tip. I can hardly wait to hear about the next project. What’s the post for?

Yeah, hes a bundle of energy, today we used a wood chopper to chop up as the trees we cut down, so tomorrow we have to take that pile of wood chips then put them all over the yard. Work is never done, but good news the bees are alive! Posting on that next

I am so sorry about the bees! I think it’s fabulous when folks cultivate their own beehives, because local honey is so very good for us. I’m so sorry about your husband’s injury. When it rains, it pours. That is my saying of late as it seems to be applying not only to my family but everybody else I know.
I loved hearing about your creative meals! My husband and I had ham and potatoes and corn on Easter too and it was wonderful comfort food. These days “comfort” is the operative word! So, I wish you and your husband more moments of comfort on all levels.

Thanks Susan, the bees survived. We saw them today even though it was 29degrees and snowed two days this week. His arm is still sore, but I cant hold him down, he keeps working.
