Ulu Knife from Alaska

What is an Ulu? An ulu is an all-purpose knife traditionally used by Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut women. It is utilized in applications as diverse as skinning and cleaning animals, cutting a child’s hair, cutting food, as a weapon and, if necessary, trimming blocks of snow and ice used to build an igloo.

So we are going to use this knife for cutting cheese and herbs. David was attracted to these everywhere we went he was staring at them thru the glass cases. He loves knifes of all kinds and once when I asked him if he really needed another knife he said, what a silly question, of course I do.

So he looked everywhere and finally decided to purchase this lovely Ulu.

David loves the pattern, which he told me is a damascus metal pattern.
We promise we will not wear this knife when exercising or swimming!

Also, when we use it at the next family party, we will post an updated picture!

  1. Okay, my Ulu knife that I bought from Alaska is nothing like this one! I bought one that I could actually use. 🙂 This one is too fancy to use! So gorgeous!!

    1. Ha, we are going to use it. I like to have family parties and can completely see me serving cheese with this, cutting it, and using it for herbs to dice up. Who knows what else. I might use it this weekend to chop up some green onions I have and then freeze them for future cooking plans.

    1. Yep, cutting hair. I mean everything a woman would do, this knife is meant for… in Alaskan Native Culture. I just think it is cool!

  5. “Beautiful” and “knife” are not words I would generally use together, but the scrimshaw craftsmanship on that blade is stunning! I don’t blame you, Dave, for “needing” this one! (Now, what did Laura get to purchase?!)

    1. It is really beautiful, thanks Nancy, I have not used it yet, but will soon. So good question on the what did I buy, Actually nothing, but I did buy some really nice earring in Japan. I am not a huge buyer, I would rather take my kids out to dinner, or my family on a trip or spend some time just hanging out with them. Yes, I know….but I am just happy exactly with what I have.

  6. I would definitely cut the cheese with that! Wait, that didn’t sound right. I might wear it on the treadmill, though. 😆

Kidding aside, what a beautiful piece.

  8. Laura,I think David can be a serial killer…… although he will cut people into little pieces with a good looking knife so we can go out in style. At least we can say that to God.

    1. Thanks aspasia, it is a cool knife, the metal makes that pattern, but also makes the knife super strong. Btw we live your name, it’s so unique and we think it’s very cool.

    1. Still – it was and I think this is why David really wanted it. So we can share it during our family parties for slicing cheeses and remember the great trip we took. We also have a Great Jamaica wooden platter we bought on our HoneyMoon and I still use it at our Family parties and we laugh about what a great trip that was (we took all our kids, since we were blending families and thought it would be the smartest choice).
