A bus ride from the cruise dock to Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls was only a few minutes from our Port. We had three choices when we arrived at our destination, check out the small museum movie and gift shop – walk over to the river to watch the salmon spawning, or a hike over to the Mendenhall Glacier & Nugget Falls. We choose to hike over, just over 20mins one way. We were really glad we did.
I must admit, on the hike over, I kept thinking we could be eaten by a bear. We had a saying – Bears don’t like surprises, so we talked while walking, nice and loud.

Thanks for visiting us Sherre, It was pretty cold that day but my husband likes the cold so it was perfect for him it also rained all day but I was prepared with a warm furry coat

We have been to Juneau a couple of times and one time to Mendenhall Glacier. I continue to remember how blue colour of the ice. A spectacular area!

I am afraid of bears too. I even bought one of those bear alarm horns at the sporting goods store. My family laughed at it but I told them we all need to scream and yell to get the bear away from us if it comes at us to attack. Love the photos.

Cheri, thanks for the photos comment. Yeah, I told david, I kept picturing as we walked a bear rolling out of the woods, like in a made up video game, and taking out people in front of us. Yes, weirdo, but what I pictured.

Sooooo beautiful! And such fun to go with the one you love.
I was blessed with the opportunity last June to camp for a week in Glacier National Park with my husband, Campbell. Breathtaking! And the bears…good Lord. We also talked and clapped while walking. We felt foolish at first…but after bears were repeatedly sighted around us day after day (we never saw one, thank God), foolish was the order of the day. 🙂

Thanks Mandy, we will be following each other, your such a wonderful writer. I am sure you hear that all the time. We would love to go back, already and we just got home. We laughed so much about the signs “Bears don’t like surprizes” but also paid attention, foolish is smart I think in these cases.

Yes, feeling foolish is better than getting eaten any day of the week. 😀 We were told the bear bells sometimes suggested are jokingly called “dinner bells,” haha! So we stuck to the clapping and bear spray.
I’m so glad you guys made it back safely and had such a wonderful time. Have you “recovered” from your travels yet? And by recovered I mean, are you still buried in laundry as Campbell and I were for days? (I must confess I did not fully unpack my backpack for two months!) I feel a vacation was a success if I needed a home vacation afterwards.

We have kids to help with laundry and dishes, we keep a strong chore list for all three of them, but work, I’m soooooooo far behind. It’s hard to catch up at work.

Aieee—no fun! In my opinion, having a chore list is FANTASTIC. For everyone. Character and ownership for the kids, rest and the joy of seeing your kids accomplish and grow in maturity for the parents. And I’m totally with you on the kids helping with laundry. 😂 Once the four of them could do their own laundry and put away their own clothes…it was almost as monumental as finishing with diapers or the day they could all buckle their own seatbelts!

Mandy I still can remember the day that the kids stopped using diapers I was ecstatic! Now my kids are grown and I’m working on getting them thru college and still making smart choices

I was the only one, everyone else said they were freezing, I was perfect, I did not even need gloves.

I knew someone who went to university in British Columbia and the campus was in a forested area. Students were told to wear bells if they went in the woods to let the bears know they were there. Wildlife will treat you with respect if you treat them with respect.
I’m intrigued by Romeo, Juneau’s spirit wolf!

We wanted to be safe, and we did see a beart when we were walking thru the woods over to a lifted deck area – once on the deck we saw a bear eating a salmon, we were only previously when in the woods – 20feet from that bear – but he looked busy happy eating the salmon.

So Romeo, Juneaus spirt wolf, we asked and he was a black wolf that lived there along with a female (unnamed to us) he just hung around that area, and was seen a lot by those who visited the falls.

I guess so, he has his own plaque, and it was a pokemon gym as well, so we hung out there for awhile and put some pokemon in the gym after defeating it. I was thinking when I was there, that maybe we would see his spirit – but nope.
